East Moriches Schools marked the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a day of remembrance and age-appropriate learning that emphasized service, courage, and community.

The day began with a brief moment of silence during morning announcements, followed by reflections about the significance of 9/11 and the sacrifices made by first responders and civilians. Members of the National Junior Honor Society placed American flags around campus as a visual tribute, creating a walkway of remembrance for arriving students and staff.

In classrooms, teachers connected history to civic responsibility. Eighth graders in Mrs. Wilson’s class discussed what it means to be a hero, why service matters, and how we want people to remember us. The lesson included the story of “The Man in the Red Bandana,” highlighting Welles Crowther’s courage as a way to inspire students to think about character and leadership in their own lives.
