At East Moriches School
District, we utilize both formative and summative assessments as key tools to
guide our instructional methods and meet the learning needs of our students.
Formative assessments
are ongoing evaluations of student learning and comprehension during a unit or
lesson. These include quick checks for understanding, such as short classroom
quizzes, questions and discussions, homework checks, and more. The feedback
from formative assessments allows teachers to see where students are struggling
in real-time. This enables us to adjust our teaching approaches to address any
concept or skill gaps while students are still gaining familiarity.
Summative assessments
evaluate student learning at the end of a defined instructional period, such as
a unit, quarter, or semester. Examples include unit tests, midterms, finals,
benchmark exams, and state standardized tests. Summative results help gauge
longer-term retention and academic growth in core subjects. By analyzing
summative assessment data, we can measure student proficiency rates and
determine whether instructional adjustments are needed across grade levels or
the curriculum.
Using both formative and
summative data, our teaching staff can pinpoint learning gaps, identify
strengths and weaknesses in our academic programs, personalize instruction
where possible, and improve lesson design and delivery. Our goal is to provide
the differentiated instruction needed to support every student's growth and
meet state education standards.
We conduct an i-Ready
assessment three times a year.
i-Ready is an online
program for reading and/or mathematics that will help your student’s teacher(s)
determine your student’s needs, personalize their learning, and monitor
progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows your teacher(s) to meet
your student exactly where they are and provides data to increase your
student’s learning gains. i-Ready consists of two parts: Diagnostic and
Personalized Instruction.
The i-Ready Diagnostic
is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your student’s
needs. Each item a student sees is individualized based on their answer to the
previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly
harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly
easier questions. The purpose of this is not to give your student a score or
grade, but instead to determine how best to support your student’s learning.
i-Ready Personalized
Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual skill
level and needs, so your student can learn at a pace that is just right for
them. These lessons are fun and interactive to keep your student engaged as
they learn.
